Move 13 final

13: When research comes closer, Marketing can disappear. When there is solid output (research, a book, ...) one doesn't need to spend time networking/advertising. Actually J needs to focus on the students, what/how they study & on the research/output; not on yippie-yay-he

Move 11 - 12

11: Consulting is erased. It doesn't seem appropriate for me to do. The focus is teaching students; they are learning.

12: Research comes closer to J

Move 9 - 10

9: Marketing approaches.

10: Consulting moves closer

Move 8

8: The new element is "the Student", who stands close to me to my right. Yes, s/he will co-shape & give life to the program. I take care of the frame & keep the pulse!

Move 6 - 7

6: Study comes closer. I think of the movie "Himmel über Berlin" & director Wim Wenders' attention to detail/ poetic precision. Studying Organisations can be a "beautiful act" (to quote Kant)

7: a new element enters...

Move 5

5: Consulting is added

I took 15min, & read pieces of a book about film director Hal Hartley (Simple Men, Trust), especially his dedication to precision, to the essential. It is a philosophical respect for a "well-made thing".

This must be an essential feature of the Center: precision, no fluff. Looking at it today, 18/3, I realize that's too much. It's OK to research consultant's actions & talk to them; but consulting is a different game to research & education.

Move 3 - 4

3: Research (that will be especially my task; to research deeply; possibly with Dynamic Snapshot)

4: Marketing

Move 1 - 2

1: J(oseph) is in the middle; 2: Study is on his left

Touchstone Constellation Set up the Center for Organizational Inquiry & Change

23 February 2009: I consider the following elements the most important to set up a Center for Organizational Inquiry & Change at NHTV University: J (me), Studie (Study), Onderzoek (Research), Advies (Consulting), Profilering (Marketing).

Can we organize with chaos, rather than trying to manage chaos?

Robin Palley wrote:

I believe we can organize and catalyze for success with chaos, but not necessarily organize in the "control" sense of the word. Chaos often is an early warning system - i.e. take a good look at the patterns struggling to emerge (the little problems inside the big problem) to point the way to exciting next steps. Chaos opens the door to integration functions in business as it does in our lives. It is only when deeply entrenched patterns are unlocked, shaken up, made chaotic, that there is room for rapid innovation and bold breakthroughs.

Center for Organizational Inquiry & Change

Do our students wake up in the morning thinking: "How can I land a job at ISS, Shell, Hilton?" Maybe some of them do.

We prepare our students not only to JOIN the market, we also prepare them to CREATE that market. What they create depends on what they love to do, what they can do & what is possible in today's economy. Some of them may be driven by the glamour to hold a senior position at a well-established firm, and that's fine. Some of them may search for something else, for something that is meaningful.

We need to educate students with a warm heart, a cool brain and great balls of fire.

Feedback on OwC in German

OwC has international appeal. Please, let us know how the insights are helping you

Hallo Joseph,

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Positive feedback in Dutch (NL)

This comment was passed on to me by colleague Harry Reinders of NHTV - Academy of Facility Management. Thanks Harry !

Beste Harry,

"Wat een ontzettend leuk en leerzaam boek heb je mee meegegeven. Ik heb het nog niet uit, maar dat zal niet lang duren. De inhoud sluit naadloos aan bij de boodschap die ik onbewust al aan het verspreiden was. Nu past ook mijn streven/wens om richting een soort van franchise-FM organisatie te gaan in een beter en breder kader.

Groeten,
